Lauren’s Lesson II

July 8, 2016

Lesson-2

They say good things come in small packages. And it’s true. Take for example, an envelope.

And with that, I give you today’s Lauren’s Lesson:

Always send a Thank You note in a timely manner after an interview-Alex Sembra, Editorial Lead

Sure, sometimes they can be a pain; they take away some of your precious time. But when it really comes down to it, a simple “Thank you” can go a long way. And at the end of the day, it really doesn’t take long–just devote five to ten minutes of your time to say thanks. After all, they spent their time meeting you, so the least you can do is take a bit of your time to thank them in return.

A good Thank You note can be seen as a kind gesture, but it’s also just good manners. In fact, people think it’s rude when you DON’T send one *cough, cough my boss*. You’d hate for this to be the reason why you didn’t get the job.

So next time you’re on the job hunt, remember to always write a Thank You note after your interview. But whatever you do, don’t bake a cake. That’s too much of a thank you. (And yes, that actually happened. And no, they did not get the job.)

PS: Here’s a related riddle. What starts with an “E” and ends with an “E” but only has one letter in it?

Ask Alison

July 8, 2016

Ask-Alison

We thought you would all like a chance to hear the interns’ take on some of what we encounter daily here at NewsON. Lauren brought you the first “Lauren’s Lessons” yesterday, and now I’m here with “Ask Alison,” a feature that will hopefully answer any questions you’ve been dying to ask.

Something we feel has often been asked is “Why NewsON?” or more specifically, “Why NewsON over another local station app?”

Well that’s easy. First off, we’re not telling you not to download your favorite local station app. Station apps offer lots of super hyper-local information that NewsON just doesn’t have time or room for. But what NewsON DOES have is a way for you to watch local news outside of your hometown. Instead of downloading separate apps for local stations all across the country, you have a one-stop-shop for local news all in one easy location.

Secondly, we do this really cool thing called alerting. When there is breaking news happening in one of our market areas, we can send you a direct alert to your phone and you can watch local coverage of that event broadcast by the local station in that city. Who else knows Phoenix, AZ or Atlanta, GA or even Fargo, ND better than the local news stations that cover news in that city every single day? This is local news you wouldn’t have access to unless you just happened to have a Baltimore news app downloaded even though you live in Seattle.

Lastly, we make it possible for you to go back and watch this news on a bigger screen than just your phone. With our Roku channel you can watch any of our 142 stations on your home TV. You can even go back and watch past broadcasts for up to 48 hours previously if you missed it.

So don’t un-install your local station app; keep it. Then go download NewsON. You won’t regret it.

Lauren’s Lessons

July 8, 2016

Lesson-2

Typical me– I have another idea again.

These past few weeks I’ve been picking up some tips people have been throwing around the office. While writing them down in my little gray notebook I realized these gems should be shared with more ears than just mine. And so Lauren’s Lessons was born.

Here’s today’s golden nugget:

Be Mindful Of Your Role- Louis Gump, CEO

When working on a team project, make sure your role is crystal clear. Know exactly where your colleague’s job ends and where your responsibilities begin. Being conscious of your role not only promotes healthy communication at the office, but it also helps you stay on task. This preventative measure also ensures that nothing is missed or forgotten in the busy work process. It seems like quite a simple premise at first, but the more you think about it, the more you realize how often this little lesson is overlooked.
